The history of Vitensa
Growing tomatoes is our passion and we’ve been doing it since we could ride a bike. Both Dennis and Robin are the sons of tomato growers and inherited the art of cultivation.
'Growing tomatoes is a tops sport'
Tomato growing is a top sport and we are committed to staying ahead in the ever-changing landscape of vegetable cultivation. We have therefore opted for sustainable growing practices, with a focus on people and the planet.
The current management team in Vierpolders has stood at the helm since 1999, at the time together with the founder Peter Grootscholten. The first snack tomatoes were grown in 2002. The company started as Firma Grootscholten Vierpolders but was renamed Vitensa in 2009, with a management board consisting of Dennis van der Knaap and Robin Grootscholten.
The first snack tomatoes were grown and packaged at the current location on Tuindersweg in 2005. The company started with three hectares of red snack tomatoes and following two expansion phases now has 7.2 hectares and grows orange tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, and brown tomatoes in addition to the red tomatoes.
